Yesterday was the best day in a long long time. I got up really early to have my father take me to the doctor. I could barely sleep the night before. I felt like a little kid waiting for Santa to come. My cast was going to be taken off! So I had already been not using my crutches, but decided to bring them anyway to appease my doctor.
The last time we went there we had to wait forever and I am happy to report that I only had to wait 5 mins before they were ready to see me. So the nurse that had put my cast on, takes me back and prepares to take off my cast. I had gone on youtube and looked up "cast removal." I was afraid that it was going to hurt but Resurgens knows what's up. It was flawless. The machine they use is pretty cool....it can cut through fiberglass but will not cut you skin. Pretty nifty.
Let's back it up a min....
Over the weekend I had bought a "waterproof" cast cover. It said it was for swimming in the pool so I thought that I could use it in the tub....right??? Ummm, no. I got out of the bath and came to realize that somehow water had leaked in and got my cast soaking wet. Needless to say I was not very happy. Not to mention that now I had one SMELLY foot. The only upside was that it was only 2 days of wet cast. Thank God for Monday. Try wearing a soggy sock for 4 weeks....I hope to never again....knock on wood.
Cut to cast removal:
I had to lay down on the table and let him saw it off. At first I was surprised that it was not really hurting and better yet was not smelling! I sold myself short, because after all the packing was taken off it started to reek. I told the nurse that he should wear a mask, and he said unfortunately he had to get used to that smell a long time ago....ugh...nasty. I could not do it. I was holding my nose when my dad caught a wiff and was like....geez that really does smell. His face was priceless. HAHA. It was bad. What was good is when the nurse started washing my foot for me....it was like one of those things people say that are "better than sex." lol. FOREALZIES!!!! Quite amazing. So I got all cleaned up and started laughing when I realized how long my leg hair was....wish I had brought a razor....but I took care of that later.
After that I had to go get an x-ray. I got off the table when the x-ray man came in and he handed me my crutches and told me to follow him. I started to put pressure on my foot and he told me to just "hop along." He just started walking ahead and I was WTF....I just got a cast off and now trying to hobble over to the x-ray room and you are just going to walk ahead and turn a corner....I could have fallen!! I made it though. They did three x-rays and then I asked the man to get me a wheel chair to tote me back to the room. I had felt a little light headed. I did notice that I had gotten much stronger since the last time I had tried to "hop" on crutches. There is an upside I guess.
Doctor Scott then came in and took a look at me. He and my dad chatted about my dad's new iPAD and then he told me that I should wear the air cast most of the time except for when I sleep and drive.....DID U HEAR THAT...I get to drive again! HOORAY! 6 weeks of being reliant on others to go ANYWHERE has sucked a bit, so this made me really happy. I have to take the air cast off to drive, but that is fine by me! Then another woman came in to fit me in the cast and after that I was well on my way.
It is a great relief to be more self sufficient. I am a pretty independent person, so the last 6 weeks have been hard on me...and for the people that have helped me "hop" along the way, I say THANK YOU!
The pictures show my air cast, x-rays, and what my ankle looks like now!
